RECYCLING CENTER - Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle

The Recycling Center  is open during Public Works business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Please visit the Public Works office located at 50 Diamond Valley Road in Woodfords to gain access to the recycling drop-off center.  The Public Works office does not close for lunch.

The Recycling Center accepts the following recyclable materials: aluminum beverage cans, glass (cleaned with no lids), plastic containers {cleaned and flattened with no lids, separate by CA Cash Redemption (CRV) and non-CRV}, tin cans, newspaper, magazines, catalogs, white paper, cardboard (flattened at seams, separate and box small cardboard, i.e. cereal boxes), and used motor oil-uncontaminated (maximum 5 gallon containers).

The following items are not accepted at the Recycling Center: junk mail, packaging, styrofoam, aluminum foil, waxed milk cartons, plastic bags, take-out food containers, gasoline, or antifreeze.

South Tahoe Refuse, located at 2140 Ruth Avenue in South Lake Tahoe (530-542-8366) accepts the following hazardous wastes: Electronic wastes ($25 fee per TV or computer monitor), mercury containing items, household and car batteries, automobile fluids (antifreeze), aerosol cans, oil-based paints, and more.  Hours: Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (except from noon to 1:00 p.m.) and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11;30 a.m.

Douglas Disposal, located at the end of Pinenut Road off Highway 395 in Gardnerville (775-782-5713) accepts most of the same hazardous waste on Thursday afternoons.  Please call for an appointment.

Batteries Plus in Carson City (775-884-0566) accepts used household and car batteries.

Public Works recycling yard provided by Alpine County.  Capital costs funded by the California Integrated Waste Management Board and the State Department of Conservation, Division of Recycling.  All revenue from collected materials goes to maintain the program.  For more information call 530-694-2140.

BURN PILE

The spring 2008 Burn Pile will be held at Turtle Rock Park.  Drop off will be on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. beginning Saturday, April 5 through Sunday, May 25, weather permitting.

The Burn Pile is held twice a year, in the spring and fall at Turtle Rock Park for Alpine County residents and is free of charge.  The event is provided by Alpine County Department of Public Works in cooperation with Markleeville Volunteer Fire Department, Woodfords Volunteer Fire Departments, and Alpine Fire Safe Council.

Accepted Materials: Natural vegetation, shrubs, pine needles, grass, leaves, branches and limbs.

Not Accepted: Stumps, treated wood, wood with nails, non-vegetation items, tires, trash, garbage, household waste, rocks, dirt, cement, construction debris and construction site clearing debris, furniture, recyclable items, metals, appliances, plastics, batteries, oil, vehicles, paint, solvents, anti-freeze, paint thinners, cleaning fluids, aerosol cans, pesticides and insecticides. 

COUNTY CLEAN-UP

The  fall 2008 County Clean-Up is scheduled for Saturday, October 18 and Sunday, October, 19 at the Public Works Yard located at 50 Diamond Valley Road in Woodfords.

The County Clean-Up is held twice a year, in the spring and fall at the Public Works Yard.  The event is free of charge and is provided as a courtesy to Alpine County residents.  Dumpsters are provided by Douglas Disposal to Alpine County residential customers as part of its franchise, the cost of which is included in residential customers’ monthly rate.  A county surplus sale and rummage sale is held at the event and the proceeds benefit Alpine Children’s Center.  Indian Tacos are usually sold at the event.

Accepted Items: Residential household garbage, metal, plastic, paper, treated wood waste, washers/dryers, water heaters, stoves, refrigerators/freezers, computers/monitors, intact TVs, florescent bulbs in original packaging, and car batteries.

Recycling Materials: Aluminum beverage cans, glass, plastic containers: CRV and non-CRV, newspaper, cardboard flattened at seams, and uncontaminated motor oil.

Surplus County Property & Rummage Sale Items: Miscellaneous office and household furniture, clothes, sporting goods, electronics in working condition, miscellaneous household items, tools, appliances, etc.

Not Accepted: Dirt, cement, stumps or similar debris, construction debris and construction site clearing debris or slash, commercial business garbage, waste or debris, chemicals, or paint.
