In accordance with the County Health Officer and with Governor Newsom's "shelter-in-place" order, our office will be closing the doors to the public and are unable to issue marriage licences or perform civil marriage ceremonies until further notice.

Do I have to be a California resident to get married in California?
No, resident and nonresident may marry in California.

Is the marriage license only good for Alpine County?
No, the license can be used throughout California.

What do I need to apply for a marriage license?
Both parties need to be present with a valid picture identification.  If you have been married before, you will need to know the specific date your last marriage ended, and how it ended (Death, Dissolution, Divorce or Nullity).

How much will it cost?
The marriage license costs $53.00.

What is the difference between a marriage license and confidential marriage license?
A original marriage license is filed with the California Department of Public Health Vital Records and a copy is filed in the Alpine County Recorder's Office.  Confidential marriage license is filed only in the Alpine County Clerk's office and it is not public information.  

Do I need an appointment to apply for a marriage license?
Yes, the County Clerk's Office will schedule appointments Monday through Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.  County offices are closed for lunch from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm.

Can we get married at the Clerk's office?
Absolutely! The County Clerk and the Assistant County Clerk are delighted to marry couples, no appointment necessary. However, due to limited staffing, please call (530) 694-2281 to confirm availability.
