Sheriff
The Alpine County Sheriff's Office is dedicated to serving the public. Our agency strives to provide a safe environment for everyone who lives in or visits Alpine County. Covering an area of roughly 1,100 square miles, approximately 90% of the land is public owned. Having no incorporated cities within the county, the Sheriff's Office provides full service law enforcement services to the entire area.

Facilities
The Markleeville office is the headquarters for the Sheriff's Office, sharing a county building with the courthouse and the District Attorney's Office. There are no jail facilities in Alpine County. Jail services are contracted to El Dorado County and Calaveras County.

Employees
The Markleeville office employs 10 sworn officers, including Sheriff Rick Stephens and Undersheriff Rob Levy. The remaining officers have various assignments ranging from patrol duties, narcotics enforcement, off-highway vehicle enforcement, search and rescue, and bailiff duties.

Preamble: We the members of the Alpine County Sheriff Department, in order to ensure the highest level of services to our community, to live out the highest standards of ethics that reflect the dignity of our noble calling, to establish a high quality of work life for those who have committed their lives to the safety and well being of their fellow citizens, do hereby pledge ourselves to the following:
  • We recognize that our primary mission and highest priority is to serve our community in the most professional, courteous and efficient manner possible.
  • To that end we will always strive to nurture a partnership based on trust and respect between the Sheriff's Department, County Family, and community.
  • Knowing that our community is evolving and rich in cultural and ethnic diversity we will continuously reach out and seek to meet its needs and concerns. In doing so we will honor and preserve the rights of every citizen and colleague embracing the principal of respect for differences in race, creed style, and personal opinion.
  • In order to be successful in our mission, each of us acknowledges his or her worth as an important part of the whole and thereby accepts all the rights and responsibilities such a position of trust within the community demands. As an ongoing process, we will strive to improve ourselves, the department, and the community.
