5 Winter Driving Tips for Mountain Roads

  1. Check Weather and Road Conditions:
    • Mountain weather can change rapidly, so always check forecasts and road conditions before traveling.
    • Be aware of chain control requirements and carry snow chains if required.
  2. Descend Slowly and Use Engine Braking:
    • Use low gears when descending to maintain control and reduce reliance on brakes, which can overheat or cause skidding on icy roads.
    • Avoid sudden braking; apply brakes gently and gradually.
  3. Be Prepared for Isolation:
    • Keep an emergency kit with blankets, food, water, a flashlight, and a fully charged phone.
    • Let someone know your route and expected arrival time in case you encounter delays or become stranded.
  4. Adjust for Elevation Changes:
    • Higher elevations can mean colder temperatures and more snow or ice. Slow down and use caution as you gain altitude.
    • Watch for black ice, particularly in shaded areas, bridge decks, and near water crossings.
  5. Respect Avalanche and Snowfall Warnings:
    • Pay attention to signs and warnings about avalanches or falling rocks, common in snowy mountain terrain.
    • Avoid parking or stopping in areas prone to avalanches or heavy snow accumulation.
